Food & Dining Magazine (foodanddine.com)  and Louisville web design firm Mr and Mrs Smith LLC, (mrwebsmith.com) are pleased to announce that they have partnered to create a free custom online restaurant ordering system to assist Louisville’s locally-owned restaurants coping with the coronavirus crisis.

The goal of this free service is plain and simple — to help Louisville restaurants reach and serve their customers in this new and ever-evolving environment.

This a free custom ordering system is designed specifically for the restaurant. It will reside on the restaurant’s own website. The entire process is completely free — no set-up fees, no monthly fees, no service fees, or delivery fees.

As the COVID-19 crisis forced Louisville restaurants to abruptly shift business models toward carryout and delivery both Jason Smith (founder of Mr and Mrs Smith, and designer of F&D‘s website) and John Carlos White (publisher of F&D) grew concerned that many independent restaurants lacked the technical resources and the funds to create an online ordering system tailored to meet this new demand.  In response, Smith set out to create a simple to use carry-out and delivery ordering system that can reside on the restaurant’s own website and easily accessed by customers on either a desktop or a mobile device.

The result is an intuitive ordering virtual menu system. Customers simply choose their items, add them to a cart, and check out. The free system allows restaurants to offer up to 18 menu items and connect the restaurant’s own online merchant for free (for full details see www.mrwebsmith.com/restaurant).

Restaurants can also opt to install additional features, for a fee, beyond the basic service, including offering more than 18 menu items, scheduled orders, delivery area restrictions, text message confirmation systems, daily and time slot limitations.

With the implementation of this free service, Food & Dining Magazine and Mr and Mrs Smith LLC are giving local independent restaurants access to high-quality design and technical support that has previously only been open to larger restaurants and chains.

“I believe delivery and carryout will continue to be a significant portion of a restaurants business well after this crisis has passed,” said White. “Restaurants need to be equipped for the new normal.”

“It is our desire,” said Smith “that our restaurants may once again thrive, both during and after this crisis.”

Skip the lunch line with Grubhub Thursday, Mar 5 2020

Grubhub offers busy students a quick and easy way to order their food ahead and, as their slogan reads, “skip the line.”

This year, the University of Louisville has partnered with Grubhub to help students order their meals ahead of arrival.

Students simply download the app, log in with their university ID and are able to order and pay with flex points and/or meal swipes so their food can be ready when they arrive.

Grubhub, popularly used as a delivery service, is currently offered on campus at Starbucks at both locations on campus, McAlister’s Deli, Subway, Panda Express, Einstein Bros Bagels, Twisted Taco, Prime Grill, Sandwich Shack and Olilo.

Grubhub is a favorite choice among busy students. Freshman Jayda Richards uses Grubhub roughly once a week to pre-order her favorite meal at Subway.

To her, it’s not only easier, but cuts down time and prevents having to wait in unexpectedly long lines. “They usually do a good job and get the food out early,” she said. “I like to use it before work so I don’t have to worry about being on time.”

Freshman Caleigh Richard-Goos typically uses Grubhub on campus twice a week to order her favorite drink, a coconut milk mocha macchiato, from the Starbucks in the SAC. As a member of the Cardinal row-team, Richards-Goos gets out of practice at 8:30 a.m, and likes to get her coffee as quickly as she can before her 9 a.m. class.

She said that she’s run into problems having to wait a long time to pick up her order at other restaurants. “I love that I can use the app. If I’m in a pinch and running late, I can order it on the way,” she said, “Starbucks in the SAC is the only place I order from regularly.”

However, with sudden influxes of students, it can be difficult to keep track of Grubhub and in-person orders.

Senior Davy Adams, an employee at Starbucks in the library, says that well over 270 Grubhub orders come through their system daily. Adams mentioned that they sometimes run into problems with the application, run out of an item or are hit with a sudden wave of people.

“Sometimes we have to turn it off because we are so busy, but all-in-all, it helps people order ahead so rushes are less. It evenly distributes the traffic,” they said.

Louisville’s most underrated eateries that students should give a try Tuesday, Mar 3 2020

Louisville is full of many flavors. From hot browns to hot chicken, this city has it all. But forget about the mainstays such as Jack Fry’s and Jeff Ruby’s; we’re looking at some of the most underrated places to eat in Louisville.

Ollie’s Trolley

Starting things off on the corner of Kentucky and Third Street in downtown Louisville is Ollie’s Trolley. What may be deemed the best french fries in the city by many sits a lonely, faded trolley; the first and last of its kind.

There are no seats, no condiment stands and surely no credit card scanners. This one-of-a-kind place has a limited menu, with several types of burgers, a chicken and fish sandwich and hot dogs. The classic order: an ollie burger with cheese and fries with extra seasoning. Just don’t forget to bring cash.

Louie’s Hot Chicken

Going from old to brand new, we find ourselves on Poplar Level Road at Louie’s Hot Chicken. Obviously, as the name states, their schtick is Nashville hot chicken, but they’re more than that. They also offer pulled pork sandwiches, brisket and smoked wings.

If you fancy yourself a BBQ lover then look no further. Their brisket is some of the best in town, and judging from the pulled pork they mix with their green beans, that’s pretty darn good too. They also have a healthy amount of sides, from baked beans to coleslaw.

Recommended order: If you’re a chicken lover, go for the tenders, spice level hot if you want some bite, with mac ‘n cheese and green beans as the sides. For the BBQ fans, opt for their pulled pork with baked beans and coleslaw on the side.

Frank’s Meat and Produce

Looking for another quick lunch but don’t want to get caught downtown? Head over to Preston Highway and step into Frank’s Meat and Produce. This deli-style butcher shop/produce market also doubles as a lunch haven.

With daily lunch specials like grilled chicken breast and pulled pork sandwiches, they’re bound to satiate your lunch hunger. It wouldn’t be a full meal either without classic deli sides like potato and pasta salad.

And while you’re waiting in line to order, go ahead and grab a container of banana pudding, you won’t regret it.

La Péche

Taking it a notch up in the to-go eating world is La Péche gourmet-to-go on Patterson Ave. and Bardstown Road. An extension of Lilly’s Bistro, this fast dining experience offers flavors from all around the world in minutes.

Their daily offerings rotate but expect dishes along the line of cajun chicken pasta or grilled salmon on rice with asparagus. But they also have a regular sandwich menu, one that boasts the famous Burger’s fried chicken sandwich.

It wouldn’t be a complete trip here either if you didn’t step over to the dessert glass and ogle at all of the options. Filled with lemon bars, brownies, puddings and cakes, there is bound to be something to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Kashmir

Rounding out the underrated eateries in town is one that is not so off the beaten path or hidden: Kashmir. Located at the heart of Bardstown Road, across from Mid City Mall, sits this wonderful Indian restaurant.

With Indian staples like chicken tikka masala and saag paneer filling the menu, they offer an authentic taste of India in Louisville. Plus, their menu is friendly to vegetarians and other limited diets.

While their dinner is nothing to scoff at, the best time to go is for lunch. This is when they offer their $12.99 lunch buffet and you can try a good amount of dishes, be it that you’ve never had Indian cuisine before. Just don’t pass by the gulab jamun (essentially a donut hole) and the kheer to cool off your spicy meal.

So, next time you choose to eat out, don’t go to the same spot you always do. Be adventurous and try something new, you just might eat it up.

I love my job. I can't imagine what I could possibly enjoy more than talking to inspiring people and then writing about those conversations.

Yes, at times, we at Insider Louisville refer to ourselves as "the Band of Misfit Toys." We're an odd bunch, but when you combine having the stomach to survive a startup AND being journalists, it isn't a big surprise that people willing to do both are a bit... off.

And lately– not to jinx myself or anything– things have just seemed to gel. Today when I finished an interview I, as always, thanked the subjects for sharing their stories with me. And one of the subjects responded, "I can't think of anyone better to go to with this." When I tried to postpone another interview until next week, the subject told me that the news was happening this week, and he said, "And I wanted to make sure you had first crack at the story." (Obviously, I canceled the reschedule.)

I've gotten emails from moms and dads thanking me for stories about their kids. I've gotten emails from moms (no dads yet) admonishing me for not writing about their kids (I'm working on it!). A subject's grandma wanted a "paper version" of a story I wrote (I had to say, "just print it out.")

Thank you, innovators and entrepreneurs and artists of Louisville for sharing your stories with me. I'm so lucky, and I am learning so much from you.

Roobiq reps Louisville in Silicon Valley... Adam Fish, who relocated his business, Roobiq, from Louisville to San Francisco came back for a visit and sat down with me and co-founder John Receveur to talk about his time at an accelerator and how the Valley was treating him.

Custom Rubber Composites: Lean manufacturing in Louisville... It's a dry business– manufacturing parts for heavy-duty conveyor belts– but fascinating to see a local manufacturer employing Lean Startup principals to their business. I also taught two of the co-founder's daughters, so it was nice to talk shop with a family I like.

GE announces new appliance line for Millennials by Millennials... This was the most popular post on the week it came out. I have to believe that it was because I chose to focus on the "this line was designed by a former intern" angle. All other local news focused on the appliances themselves.

Forest Giant puts teachers through a "mini-hackathon"... How could I not love this story? It brought me back together with Dave Durand, founder of Forest Giant and the big brain behind the startup team, City Anchor, that I won Startup Weekend with back in September. Dave remains a hero of mine.

Other cool stuff I've been doing:

The Big Four bridge is everything everyone says it is. It's a perfect 1.5 mile round trip walk almost to Indiana. The BF and I went late one night. I'll have to check it out during the day. I'm ashamed it took me so long, but I will be a regular.

I'm ambivalent about TWELFTH NIGHT at Shakespeare in the Park. It was long (we left at intermission around 10p) and kind of full of pomp. And non-Louisville actors? Unfortunate. But I am not ambivalent about the experience. There are few things nicer than watching theatre outdoors on a lovely summer evening. Bring snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. You can buy alcohol there. Don't believe the website when it says there's pre-show entertainment; there wasn't when we went.

On the same night I went to Shakespeare, I went to Burger Boy Diner. Yes, it's a greasy-spoon diner, but yes, it was also fantastic. Fabulous service, a reasonably well-appointed jukebox. I got a burger and fries for under $6 and couldn't have been happier with the experience.
