Good Food and Mental Health Connection with Vincent Gonzales Tuesday, May 26 2020

Every Wednesday is WFPK Mental Health Day where we play listeners’ requests which is meaningful and loads of fun. We also have special guests who are experts in their fields of mental health services. On Wednesday, May 20th we spoke with Vincent Gonzales, a social worker at Seven Counties Services, who was physically and mentally transformed by changing his diet. He lost weight and lifted his depression considerably. Now he speaks to various groups about his transformation and belief that diet and mental health are inextricably connected. He is also an advocate for supplying areas of our city that are food deserts with better availability of fresh foods. One organization who is doing just that is New Roots. You can listen to our conversation below and hear the song by Fiona Apple that’s getting him through at this time.

Louisville Music COVIDiary #11: 2 for 1 today with Left Field and Raspberry Pie Sunday, May 3 2020

Today’s Louisville Music COVIDiary #11 features 2 bands that have one musician in common which is Patrick Fitzgerald who plays bass and mandolin.

First up is Left Field which is Debbie Graf, Brian Buford, Marty Purdy, and Patrick Fitzgerald.  They made this recording from separate living rooms during social distancing of the Karla Bonoff song “Home”.

Second, is Raspberry Pie which features David Morrison (Piano), Richard Sagman (Guitar), Ian Mutchnick (Percussion) , and Patrick Fitzgerald (Bass).  Patrick wrote this tune years ago, and they recorded it last July.  They did not take the time to edit the video for the song “Numbers” until now.

Welcome to the Louisville Music COVIDiary, a series of posts that highlight some of our vibrant, talented, and amazing musicians in and around our City as they deal with the effects of the COVID19 Pandemic. One of the most devastating effects for musicians has been the forced closure of our music venues and other places for artists to perform, leaving many without much needed income and disconnected from their audiences.  In this series, we have asked musicians to send us a song or story about what they are going through during this strange and uncertain time. We also told them they can share whatever they want. We trust our local musicians’ creativity!

If you’d like to participate, please upload your video to YouTube then send the link to Laura Shine at lshine@wfpk.org.

Moon Taxi and The LEE Initiative Thursday, Apr 30 2020

At 4 pm today we’ll be speaking with Trevor Terndrup, lead singer for the band Moon Taxi about performing tomorrow night (this Friday, May 1) on their Facebook page to help raise money and awareness for the Louisville based organization by Chef Edward Lee called The LEE Initiative that is helping restaurant workers during this very difficult time of the COVID-19 crisis. Many are without work and income and The LEE Initiative is providing as much relief as they can in over 19 cities from Louisville to New York to L.A.   When Trevor saw what they were doing to help, he wanted to be a part of it for his home city of Nashville, TN. and for others as well. Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse in Nashville will be their venue tomorrow and has also donated to the initiative as well as has Makers Mark. The show will be on their facebook pages too.

More information on The Lee Initiative here.

The Paws Report for 4/28/20: Meet the grand Duchess! Tuesday, Apr 28 2020

Today on The Paws Report with The Kentucky Humane Society at 3:30 pm:

Meet big, beautiful, bodacious Duchess! This Rottweiler is 100 pounds of pure sweetness. This happy-go-lucky hippo loves everyone she meets, and in her previous home, she lived with other dogs as well as children. Sadly, her previous family couldn’t keep her because of breed restrictions in their rental apartment, so they brought her to the Kentucky Humane Society. Duchess’s foster family reports that her favorite activities are napping on the couch, enjoying the sun in the back yard, and going for short walks and car rides. Duchess arrived at the Kentucky Humane Society heartworm positive, so she underwent heartworm treatment, but now she’s ready for her forever home. KHS adoption centers remain closed due to the pandemic, but KHS is offering pet adoptions by appointment after applications have been submitted online and approved. To learn how to adopt, visit www.kyhumane.org/adopt/how-to-adopt.

We will also discuss:

–          The Kentucky Humane Society’s Healthy Pets Clinic reopened this week to provide flea/tick/heartworm preventives and dewormer to current clients. New clients are not being accepted at this time, and the clinic is not offering vaccines, pet exams or diagnostics. Learn more at www.kyhumane.org/healthy-pets-clinic.

–          Also, the KHS COVID-19 Pet Food Bank continues, but we have moved to an appointment-based model. People can call the Pet Help Line at 502-509-4738 for more information.

Cancelled: The Trifecta of Festivals – Bourbon & Beyond and more Friday, Apr 24 2020

Just received word that the trifecta of festivals put on by the Danny Wimmer Group have been cancelled for 2020. See their statement below:

Dear Bourbon & Beyond Family,

In our heart of hearts we hoped and prayed that COVID-19 would not prevent us from having the 2020 Louisville Trifesta.  In what feels like a repetitive bad dream, we now have to announce that Hometown Rising, Louder Than Life and Bourbon & Beyond festivals, held at Highland Festival Grounds at Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, KY, are being cancelled for 2020.  We are working really hard to bring as much of our 2020 lineups back to 2021.

Even though the festivals are not until September, the advanced planning realities of producing three back-to-back-to-back events have necessitated that a decision be made sooner than later.  Our decision also conforms with the advice of health officials.

We are truly heartbroken it has come to this.  We want to thank you for your patience, support and loyalty.  We hope you are staying safe as well as physically and mentally well.  We are blessed to have such an amazing Festival Family, and together, as a community, we will get through this.

With Love,
Team DWP
