The Opening Act: In The Pines Monday, Sep 30 2019

In The Pines is a five-piece band based in Cincinnati. It’s their creative mix of psychedelic rock, smart songwriting, catchy hooks and grooves that make you first take notice. Fueled by guitar, drums and sax, their sound shares the feel of 60’s Garage, Art-Rock, Shoegaze and Brit-Pop. Confused? Don’t be. Just give them a listen, it’ll make perfect sense.

You can catch the band this Friday (10/4) at Zanzabar appearing with BOA and Jeez Loueez. For a taste of what you’ll hear, check out the track, I’m Good, from their sophomore album, San Lorenz. This is In The Pines, The Opening Act!

The Opening Act: Elephant Path Thursday, Sep 26 2019

Since their inception in February 2018, Elephant Path quickly developed into one of Louisville’s premier psych-rock bands. Not to be restricted by that tag, the trio makes their own musical path, pulling from many genres and influences. Taking a DIY approach to writing and recording, they are free to experiment with all sorts of different sounds, textures and instrumentation. The golden rule they all share during songwriting is to always “serve the song.”

You can catch the band this Friday at the Care Less Lounge, appearing with Jon Worthy & The Bends. Check out their recent single, You Got Me. This is Elephant Path, The Opening Act!

The Opening Act: The Empty Room Tuesday, Sep 24 2019

The Empty Room began as a friendship between Jason Clarke and Daniel Cartledge early in their college days in Virginia. By the time they graduated, the duo had become a trio with the addition of Dan’s wife, Jen Cartledge.  It was then that the band developed their signature three part harmonies. A couple of years after their graduation, the band moved to Louisville, adding new member Chris Miller. Their alternative post rock sound has been described as “vulnerable” and “comforting”.

You can catch the band this Friday at the Care Less Lounge, appearing with Jon Worthy & The Bends and Elephant Path. Check out their recent single, Dangling Conversation. This is The Empty Room, The Opening Act!

The Opening Act: Jake Xerses Fussell Wednesday, Sep 18 2019

Based in Durham, North Carolina, singer/guitarist Jake Xerxes Fussell emerged from a background steeped in the traditional music and folklore of the American South. Growing up in Columbus, Georgia, Jake would often accompany his father Fred, who traveled across the Southeast documenting traditional culture. It was this fieldwork that included recording blues and old-time musicians. It was that exposure to folk and blues roots music that resulted in Jake’s interest into finger-picking on the guitar. Later, he began playing and studying with elder musicians in the Chattahoochee Valley, apprenticing with Piedmont blues legend Precious Bryant. Jake’s debut album arrived in 2015 and featured his distinctive finger-style playing and unique take on traditional blues and folk songs. There’s also a connection to the Louisville music scene. He’s worked with Joan Shelley, Nathan Salsburg, and Bonnie “Prince” Billy.

Jake returns to Louisville this Thursday (9/19) appearing with Daniel Norgren at Zanzabar. WFPK is proud to present the show. Check out The River St. Johns from his new album, Out of Sight. This is Jake Xerxes Fussell, The Opening Act!

The Opening Act: Will Johnson Tuesday, Sep 17 2019

He’s been called “one of the most prolific artists in American indie rock”. For good reason. Ex- Centro-matic front-man Will Johnson was also lead singer with South San Gabriel, has released numerous solo records, and is a member of the bands Monsters of Folk, New Multitudes and Overseas, and has also performed as part of the Undertow Orchestra. And that’s just scratching the surface. In addition to being an accomplish painter, the multi-instrumentalist, it’s his classic soft-spoken rasp, which trademarks most anything he does; you know a Will Johnson vocal wherever it is, whether it’s with a band or a solo project.

WFPK is proud to present Will Johnson tonight at Headliners appearing with Bob Mould. For a little taste of what you’ll here, check out the tune Cornelius from his soon-to-be-released album, Wire Mountain, due Sept 27. This is Will Johnson, The Opening Act!

The Opening Act: Freakwater Thursday, Sep 12 2019

It’s more than fitting that a group from Kentucky should take a name that’s a term for moonshine. Freakwater is the pairing of Louisville natives Janet Beveridge Bean and Catherine Ann Irwin. The singers/guitarists/songwriters mix original material and traditional covers, all done in a spare, acoustic country-folk style with close vocal harmonies. Their instrumentation often features string band staples like steel guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and Dobro, and the strong Appalachian overtones that result have often drawn the duo comparisons to the Carter Family. Both had originally performed in punk bands before becoming roommates in 1982 and performing as Freakwater. Janet was also co-founder of the Neil-Young influenced alt-rock band Eleventh Dream Day.

The band makes a rare Louisville appearance this Saturday (9/14) at Old Forester’s Paristown Hall. They’re appearing with Drive By Truckers and WFPK is proud to be presenting the show! Check out the tune, The Asp and the Albatross, from their latest album, Scheherazade. This is Freakwater, The Opening Act!

In addition to hometown shows, she frequently tours Scotland and the UK. Recently she was asked to step in as co-host the 30-year-old radio program Kentucky Homefront. The Opening Act: flora cash Thursday, Sep 5 2019

Their story began online. Six years ago, musicians Cole Randall and Shpresa Lleshaj discovered each other’s music on Soundcloud. Despite being separated by thousands of miles, Lleshaj living in Sweden and Randall in Minneapolis, they formed a fast online friendship that escalated quickly via Skype. Within a year of meeting in person, they were married. Their whirlwind romance only fueled what brought them together in the first place — music. After settling in Sweden, they began crafting atmospheric, indie electro-folk under the moniker flora cash. The duo has said that they’ve never revealed the origin or meaning of their band name to anyone. Following the release of several EP’s and singles, they delivered full-length albums in 2016 and 2017, both to critical acclaim.

Be sure to catch the duo this Saturday (9/7) at Old Forester’s Paristown Hall appearing with Judah & The Lion. WFPK is a proud sponsor of the show. Check out, You’re Somebody Else, a song from their latest EP, Press. This is flora cash, The Opening Act!

The Opening Act: Flyte Tuesday, Sep 3 2019

Flyte is an alternative-pop band from London. The story begins when the band’s Will Taylor was ten. After receiving a nylon-stringed guitar and a Beatles songbook he was hooked. He knew was destined to be a songwriter. At age 13, he formed his first band. Ten years later that he reconnected with 3 childhood school friends who happened to be gifted musicians and vocalists as well. Things quickly came together and snowballed after a video of them performing one of their songs was posted to the internet. In 2017, Flyte signed to Island Records and worked with Courtney Barnett’s producer Burke Reid on their debut album, The Loved Ones. It’s an album of perfectly constructed songs rich with tight harmonies and bright melodies. And there’s the Beatles’ influence as well.

Lead singer Will Taylor says their latest single, I Still Believe In You, “Was born out of a very difficult time and grapples with truth, honesty and fidelity in a relationship.” Their new EP, White Roses, is coming out on September 20th. The Louisville-based noise-pop band mixes the interplay of angular guitar riffs, catchy bass hooks and crazy beats with sharp vocals from Miranda Cason.
