The Opening Act: Jaye Jayle Monday, Jan 20 2020

Initially, Jaye Jayle was the folk-and blues-tinged alter ego solo project of Young Widows’ singer/guitarist Evan Patterson. It soon grew into a band that took its gritty version of Americana into wide-ranging and gripping directions. Formed in late 2013, the project expanded its sound to include atmospheric passages and synth-driven rock as well as folk- and blues-influenced fare. Joining Evan are bandmates Todd Cook on bass, Neal Argabright on drums and Corey Smith on other instrumentation to create haunted, ominous garage-minded indie rock.

You’ll have the chance to catch the Louisville based band at Headliners this Friday, January 24 appearing with June 44. Fellow Louisvillians Parlour are also on the bill. For a preview, check out the track Ode to Betsy. This is Jaye Jayle, The Opening Act!

The Opening Act: Town Mountain Tuesday, Jan 14 2020

They’re not your typical bluegrass band. Nor do they want to be. Since forming in 2007, Town Mountain has been reshaping the strict genre, and quit worrying about appealing to only one certain audience. Their music is a mix of first and second generation of bluegrass spiced with country, and old school rock ‘n’ roll with a honky-tonk edge. Influences run the gamut from Jerry Garcia, to Willie, Waylon, Merle, and Springsteen. The group has earned raves for their hard-driving sound and rowdy, energetic live performances.

You can witness for yourself this Thursday (1/16) at Old Forrester’s Paristown Hall, opening for Greensky Bluegrass. WFPK is proud to present the show! Check out their song, Down Low, featuring their good friend Tyler Childers. It’s just a taste of what you’ll hear Thursday. This is Town Mountain, The Opening Act!

The Opening Act: griffytown Wednesday, Dec 18 2019

In the late nineteenth century, Dan Griffith, a freed slave, moved to a log cabin on Old Harrod’s Creek Road. The area, near Berrytown and Anchorage became known as Griffytown in his honor.

That’s where Louisville based, original folk music duo Katy Rene Quinn and Rebecca Osborne take their band name from. Theirs is a musical marriage, performing as griffytown. They share original songs and stories that focus on life, love, wellness and intention.

You can catch the harmonies of griffytown on Wednesday, December 26 at Headliners. It’s a night of Louisville music featuring Joan Osborne (Rebecca’s sister) and Bridge 19.

Check out their song, Victor, a story about addiction, trauma, and the ultimate victory over them. It’s a call-out to the VICTOR in all of us. This is griffytown, The Opening Act!

The Opening Act: Ida Mae Monday, Nov 25 2019

Heavily influenced by American roots music and Delta Blues, British duo Ida Mae is the musical marriage of Christopher Turpin and Stephanie Jean Ward. The pair initially made their mark with the alternative rock band Kill It Kid they formed over a decade ago. Walking away from that bands’ success, the two set out to do the one thing they had always had their hearts and minds set on: make the kind of music that inspired them to become musicians in the first place, the sound of the American Deep South. The first song the pair ever harmonized on was Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee’s “Ida Mae,” and the name seemed like a natural fit when it came time to launch their new project.

Touring in support of their critically-acclaimed debut album, Chasing Lights, brings them to the Brown Theater this Wednesday, appearing with Rodrigo y Gabriela on the Mettavolution Tour. WFPK is proud to be presenting the show! For a preview taste of what you can expect, check out their latest single, Reaching. This is Ida Mae The Opening Act!

The Opening Act: Falls Wednesday, Nov 20 2019

Their story goes like this: THEY MET. THEY FELL IN LOVE. THEY WROTE SONGS. THEY FOUGHT. THEY MADE UP. THEY BROKE UP. THEY WROTE SONGS. For most, that would be the end of the tale. Not for the Australian duo Falls. (Melinda Kirwin and Simon Rudston-Brown). With songs that are both intimate and catchy, lyrically rich and full of gorgeous harmonies, it’s hard to not fall for them….pardon the pun. Their onstage chemistry is undeniable, and their emotionally fueled live performances get rave reviews wherever they play.

You can see and hear for yourself and catch the creative duo this Saturday at Zanzabar opening for the Ruen Brothers. For a preview taste, check out their catchy new single, On Attack. This is Falls, The Opening Act!

The Opening Act: The Mattson 2 Thursday, Nov 14 2019

Known for their expansive jazz and psych-rock instrumentals, The Mattson 2 consists of identical twin brothers Jared and Jonathan Mattson. The duo emerged in the 2000s playing around the Pacific Coast of California. Their good-time vibe sound is the result of the combination of Jared’s layered guitars and loops with Jonathan’s tribal hard-bop drumming. It’s Art Rock, Psychedelia, and Jazz with a dash of Surf thrown in for good measure. In addition to releasing their own albums, they’ve collaborated with numerous other artists, including Toro Y Moi. That album, recorded under the name Chaz Bundick Meets The Mattson 2, hit the #1 spot on the Billboard contemporary jazz charts. And then there’s the trippy re-working of John Coltrane’s legendary A Love Supreme. Their music has been described as “a variety of jazz more liquid than jagged, more 10cc than Charlie Parker”.

You can catch the creative duo this Friday at Zanzabar opening for this weeks’ WFPK Live Lunch guest, Marco Benevento. Check out the track Essence, from their latest album, Paradise. This is The Mattson 2, The Opening Act!

Jessica Dobson is the multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist, singer and bandleader for Deep Sea Diver. Her career took off at an early age. Signed as a solo artist to Atlantic Records at the age of 19, she went on to perform as a touring and recording member of The Shins, Spoon, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, as well as Beck and Conor Oberst. The Opening Act: Dee White Wednesday, Nov 6 2019

Despite being just 20 years old, the music of Dee White sounds just as vintage country as the real stuff. Not only has he been featured on Rolling Stone’s 10 New Country Artists You Need to Know, but Dan Auerbach and Alison Krauss are big fans as well. So much so that Auerbach is both mentor and producer of White’s full-length debut album, Southern Gentleman. Krauss contributes vocal on 4 of the albums’ tracks. Raised in the small-town of Slapout, Alabama, he’s a natural singer-songwriter with a sound that reminds you of classic Sixties and Seventies country. Auerbach sings his praise saying, “I knew he must be the real thing. And when he started to sing, what came out was the most original voice I’ve heard in years.”

You can hear for yourself this Friday night at Zanzabar appearing with Hiss Golden Messenger. For a sneak preview, check out his track, Crazy Man. This is Dee White, The Opening Act!

The Opening Act: Magnolia Boulevard Monday, Nov 4 2019

Sometimes you just know when the chemistry is right. The first time the members of Magnolia Boulevard picked up instruments together in early 2017, they knew it was something special. The five-piece band from Lexington mixes blues, soul and rock ‘n’ roll with elements of funk, jam band, country, bluegrass, and psychedelia. Fueled by an incredibly tight rhythm section, tasteful slide guitar licks and topped by the soul-stirring, powerhouse vocals from Maggie Noelle, the band has been building a following wherever they play.

They are currently opening up for Blues Traveler on the “Four Live” 25th-anniversary tour. WFPK is proud to be presenting the show this Friday at Headliners! (Sorry, it’s SOLD OUT!) For a preview taste, check out their debut single, the slow-burning ballad Sister. This is Magnolia Boulevard, The Opening Act!
