Men’s soccer defeats NC State in the regular season finale Wednesday, Oct 27 2021

By Daniel Rankin —

This past weekend, Louisville men’s soccer played at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium for their final time in the regular season. The UofL Men’s Soccer Team took down the NC State Wolf Pack with a final score of 2-1.

The Cardinal’s defense was strong and didn’t allow a shot until the 29th minute, which senior goalkeeper Detre Bell saved.

In the 37th minute, the Cards finally got on the board after senior forward Pedro Fonseca converted on a perfect opportunity. The 1-0 score remained going into halftime.

After the break, NC State scored a 68th-minute equalizer, putting the game at a 1-1 draw. However, the tied game didn’t last long. After excellent ball movement and fearless drives by Fonseca and midfielder Eric Danquah, freshman striker Aboubacar Camara scored his ACC leading 13th goal of the year.

The goal came just four short minutes after the equalizer, bringing the score to 2-1.

NC State started to fall behind, as the Cards led with a 14-5 shot advantage and dominated possession. This led to Louisville’s win for the night.

The win added a crucial 3 points; allowing the Cards to stay on top of the ACC standings at 15 points, just barely ahead of Clemson’s 12 points.

Clemson and Louisville will play each other to finish the regular season and determine the champion of the Atlantic Division on Friday, October 29th.
After that, the Cards will anticipate coming home for future post-season matches at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.

Louisville makes a comeback in first game against NC State Saturday, Mar 20 2021

By Hannah Walker —

The University of Louisville’s No. 7 baseball team won against North Carolina State on March 19 with a final score of 13-1. They played on North Carolina’s home field and will continue to play for a chance to win this weekend’s game-series.

U of L junior Michael Kirian was the starting pitcher. He was successfully able to face 26 batters and make 5 strikeouts within the first few innings.

Following Kirian’s pitching, U of L had a great start when two points were made during the top of the first inning. Sophomore catcher Henry Davis made a homerun and junior outfielder Luke Brown scored.

NC State struggled to score against Louisville when 3 more points were made by the Cardinals during the top of the second inning. Davis doubled down infield and sophomore infielder Cooper Bowman, freshman infielder Christian Knapczyk and sophomore catcher/infielder Ben Metzinger were all able to score.

No points were made for either team during the third or fourth inning, but Louisville continued to add to the score board when 4 points were made in the fifth inning. Metzinger doubled to left field and junior outfielder Trey Leonard, junior infielder/outfielder Lucas Dunn and junior infielder/outfielder Cameron Masterman all scored.

The Cardinals had high energy throughout the rest of the game when two more points were made during the seventh inning. Dunn made a homerun and sophomore infielder Tim Borden scored as well.

Two more points were made by Louisville during the eighth and ninth inning, which led them to a 12-point lead against NC State by the end of the game.

Louisville will play again March 20 at 2:00 p.m. against NC State in hopes of a consecutive win.

Satterfield scores bowl game first season Sunday, Nov 17 2019

By Gabriel Wiest —

With a 34-20 win against NC State, head coach Scott Satterfield secured bowl game eligibility his first season with Louisville.

After taking a harsh 52-27 loss against Miami, it was unclear if Louisville (6-4, 4-3) could bounce back against another ACC competitor. The away game against NC State added to the challenge. Louisville lost to NC State (4-6, 1-5) last year 52-10, putting pressure on Satterfield to change the tide.

Recap

After a dry first quarter, junior Dez Fitzpatrick caught a 43 yard pass from sophomore Micale Cunningham, putting the Cardinals on the scoreboard first. NC State answered Louisville with a touchdown and a field goal ending the first half in the lead 10-7.

The Cardinals surged in the third quarter against NC State, scoring three touchdowns. Sophomore Tutu Atwell started off the scoring in the second half with a 74 yard catch from Cunningham.

Freshman Marshon Ford continued the momentum with another long 42 yard pass from Cunningham. Graduate Ean Pfeifer ended off the quarter with another touchdown thrown by Cunningham leaving the score 27-10.

NC State answered the Cardinals after a dead third quarter with a touchdown in the beginning of the fourth. Ford then scored his second touchdown for the Cardinals. NC State had the final say, with a field goal, not enough to put the Wolfpack on top.

Overview

Cunningham helped lead the Cardinals to victory throwing four touchdown passes. The offense also took a passing heavy approach against NC State, passing 249 yards while rushing 77 yards.

On the book Louisville had less total yards than NC State with 377-326. However, Louisville’s defense tightened down in the red zone, making sure that NC State could not take advantage of the defensive line as other teams have this season.

With a 2-10 season last year, it is clear that Satterfield is taking steps in the right direction with the Cardinals already at .500 ball. Before the season started some Louisville fans were skeptical how the Satterfield era would look. With bowl game eligibility, Satterfield has not only secured fans’s concerns, but put Louisville in a growing spotlight.

Louisville will face off next against Syracuse Nov. 23 at 4 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
