U of L men’s tennis heads home after loss in ACC tournament Wednesday, Apr 28 2021

The U of L men’s tennis team travelled to Rome, Ga. to compete in the ACC tournament. They returned home after a first-round 4-2 loss to No. 37 Duke. The Cards ended their season with a 9-12 overall record and a 3-8 ACC record. 

In doubles, Duke secured wins on courts one and three. 

Luca Keist and Andrew Dale (Duke) defeated junior Alex Wesbrooks and freshman Kyle Tang 6-3.

On court one, No. 45 junior Fabien Salle and sophomore Matthew Fung fell 7-6 (7-4) in a close matchup against No. 20 Garrett Johns and Sean Sculley (Duke). 

Junior Sergio Hernandez and senior Tin Chen were tied 6-6 with Duke’s Michael Heller and Andrew Zhang when the doubles point was clinched.

In singles, Duke took over courts one, four, and five to clinch the match. 

No. 69 Johns (Duke) defeated Chen 6-3, 6-3 to tally a point for the Blue Devils. 

Louisville fought back on court two as No. 57 Salle took down Sculley (Duke) 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Duke widened their lead with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win on court four over junior Josh Howard-Tripp. 

The Cards added another point to their total as junior David Mizrahi overcame Heller (Duke) 7-5, 7-6 (7-3). 

The Blue Devils clinched the match on court five with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 win over Fung.

U of L women’s tennis drops first round match against Duke Wednesday, Apr 28 2021

The U of L women’s tennis team travelled to Rome, Ga. to compete in the ACC tournament. They returned home after a 4-0 loss against No. 14 Duke in the first round. The Cards ended their season with a 9-13 overall record and a 3-10 conference record. 

In doubles, Duke took over courts two and three.

Chloe Beck and Karolina Berankova (Duke) defeated seniors Raven Neely and Chelsea Sawyer 6-3.

On court three, sophomore Tatiana Simova and junior Dina Chaika fell 6-3 to Duke’s Kelly Chen and Georgia Drummy. 

Junior Rhea Verma and sophomore Andrea Di Palma were up 5-4 against Meible Chi and Margaryta Bilokin (Duke), but their match was left unfinished. 

In singles, Duke secured wins on courts one, two, and six.

Nelly fell 6-2, 6-2 to Beck.

Duke tallied another point as Di Palma came up short against Drummy (6-3, 6-2).

The match was clinched on court six as Chaika fell 5-7, 0-6 to Hannah Zhao (Duke).

U of L men’s tennis falls 4-1 to No. 5 Virginia on Senior Day Tuesday, Apr 20 2021

The Cards (9-11, 3-8 ACC) hosted No. 5 Virginia (18-2, 12-0 ACC) for their last match of the regular season before heading off to the ACC tournament. Louisville fell 4-1 to the Cavaliers at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center this Sunday afternoon.

The match started off with a tribute to senior Clement Filho, who has been with the team for five years. 

In doubles, Virginia took over courts two and three. 

Junior Alex Wesbrooks and freshman Kyle Tang fell 6-0 to Virginia’s Ryan Goetz and Gianni Ross. 

Louisville evened the score as No. 63 junior Fabien Salle and sophomore Matthew Fung defeated Jeffrey von der Schulenburg and Inaki Montes (UV) 6-2. 

Virginia clinched the doubles point on court two as No. 89 junior Sergio Hernandez and senior Tin Chen fell short (7-5) against William Woodall and Matthew Lord (UV). 

In singles, Virginia secured wins on courts one, three, and four.

Junior Josh Howard-Tripp fell 6-2, 6-3 to No. 96 Goetz (UV).

Bringing the overall score to 3-0, Hernandez suffered a 7-6, 6-1 loss to Montes (UV). 

Louisville fought back on court two as No. 57 Salle prevailed over Virginia’s Rodesch in a third set (4-6, 6-3 and 6-4). 

The match was clinched on court one as Chen fell 7-6, 7-5 in a close matchup with No. 24 Schulenburg (UV). 

Matches on courts five and six were left unfinished. 

Fung split sets with Ross (UV) and was tied 1-1 in the third (4-6, 7-6 and 1-1), and junior David Mizrahi split sets with Virginia’s Woodall (7-5, 6-7). 

Men’s tennis travels to Rome, Georgia on Wednesday, April 21 to compete in the ACC tournament.

U of L women’s tennis celebrates Senior Day with 6-1 win over Butler Tuesday, Apr 20 2021

The Cards (8-12, 3-10 ACC) hosted Butler for their last match of the regular season before heading off to the ACC tournament. Louisville defeated the Bulldogs 6-1 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center this Saturday afternoon. 

The match started off with a tribute to seniors Raven Neely and Nikolina Jovic. 

In doubles, Louisville took over courts one and two.

On court one, sophomore Andrea Di Palma and junior Rhea Verma defeated Natalie Boesing and Lauren Marx (BU) 6-2.

Shortly after, seniors Chelsea Sawyer and Raven Neely took down Delaney Schurhamer and Sara Linn (BU) 6-2.

Juniors Dina Chaika and Jelena Vujanic were up 5-4 against Lauryn Padgett and Veronika Bruetting (BU) when matchplay stopped. 

The Cards secured wins on all courts except one in singles. 

Di Palma finished first with a quick 6-1, 6-1 win over Butler’s Padgett.

Verma secured another win for the Cards (6-2, 6-1) on court four over Linn (BU). 

Neely took down Schurhamer (BU) 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the match. 

Bringing the overall score to 5-0, Vujanic prevailed over Marx (BU) 6-3, 6-2. 

Next, Chaika took over court six with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bruetting (BU). 

Butler fought back one court one as Boesing (BU) defeated Jovic 6-4, 7-6 and 10-6 to complete the match. 

Women’s tennis travels to Rome, Georgia on Wednesday, April 21 to compete in the ACC tournament.

No. 50 men’s tennis comes up short against No. 34 Virginia Tech Saturday, Apr 17 2021

Men’s tennis (9-10, 3-7 ACC) fell 4-3 in a close match against No. 34 Virginia Tech (11-7, 6-5 ACC) this Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

The Cards took the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.

Junior Alex Wesbrooks and freshman Kyle Tang swept Ryan Kros and Matthis Ross (VT) 6-0 on court three.

Following shortly after, No. 63 sophomore Matthew Fung and junior Fabien Salle faced No. 25 Ryan Fishback and Jordan Chrysostom (VT) 6-3 to clinch the doubles point.

Senior Tin Chen and junior Sergio Hernandez were tied 4-4 with Virginia Tech’s Mitch Harper and Alex Ribeiro, but their match was left unfinished.

The Cards took their winning momentum into singles as Salle defeated Ross (VT) 6-3, 6-3 to give Louisville a 2-0 lead.

Virginia Tech fought back with a win on court one as Harper (VT) defeated Chen in a third set (6-1, 2-6 6-4)

The Hokies evened the score as Hugo Maia (VT) secured a 6-3, 4-6 6-3 win over junior Josh Howard-Tripp.

No. 71 Hernandez put the Cards back in the lead with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 (7-4) win over No. 78 Carlo Donato (VT).

Virginia Tech brought the score to 3-3 as Alvaro Ariza (VT) prevailed 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 over junior David Mizrahi.

The match was decided on court five when Virginia Tech’s Fishback overcame Fung in a third set (6-3, 4-6 6-3).

Men’s tennis will host Virginia for their Senior Day on Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

No. 50 women’s tennis falls 3-4 to Clemson Monday, Apr 12 2021

The No. 50 Louisville women’s tennis team (7-12, 3-10 ACC) was defeated by the Clemson Tigers (8-14, 2-10 ACC) Sunday, April 11 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Louisville lost with a final score of 3-4. 

The Tigers took the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. 

Junior Rhea Verma and sophomore Andrea Di Palma took over court one with a 6-2 win over Clemson’s Cristina Mayorova and Sophia Hatton. 

Clemson bounced back with a 6-4 win on court three over senior Nikolina Jovic and junior Dina Chaika. 

The point was clinched on court two as Ali Despain and Laura Marti (CLEMSON) defeated Chelsea Sawyer and graduate student Raven Neely.

Louisville fought hard in singles but came up short.

Mayorova (CLEMSON) defeated Jovic 6-4, 6-2; advancing Clemson’s overall lead to 2-0. 

Hatton upset No. 93 Di Palma 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

The Cards then went on to secure two consecutive wins on courts three and four. 

On court three, Neely took down Clemson’s Middlebrooks in a close 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) match. 

Sawyer topped Despain (CLEMSON) in a third set (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) to bring the overall score to 3-2.

The Tigers clinched the match as Marti defeated junior Jelena Vujanic 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. 

The Cards finished strong as Verma took down Lana Sipek (CLEMSON) 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. 

Women’s tennis finishes their regular season next weekend as they face Butler today at 12 p.m. They will celebrate their Senior Day before the match.

No. 32 Georgia Tech tops U of L men’s tennis Monday, Apr 12 2021

The Louisville men’s tennis (9-9, 3-5 ACC) traveled to Atlanta  to face No. 32 Georgia Tech (11-8, 5-6 ACC) on April 11. They returned home with a 5-2 loss against the Yellow Jackets. 

Georgia Tech took the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. 

Louisville started off strong with junior Alex Wesbrooks and freshman Kyle Tang defeating Zummy Bauer and Brandon McKinney (GT) 6-4.

The Yellow Jackets evened the score with a close 7-5 win over junior Fabien Salle and sophomore Matthew Fung. 

The point was decided on court two as senior Tin Chen and junior Sergio Hernandez fell 7-6 (8-6) to Brandon Freestone and Pablo Schelcher (GT). 

Georgia Tech continued their winning streak with a 6-3, 6-3 win on court six over junior David Mizrahi.  

Salle put the Cards on the scoreboard with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Andres Martin (GT).

Advancing the score to 3-1, Georgia Tech’s Marcus McDaniel defeated Chen in a third set (6-1, 1-6, 6-4). 

Hernandez tallied another point for the Cards as he took down Schelcher (GT) 7-5, 7-5. 

Georgia Tech then secured wins on courts four and five to finish the match.

McKinney (GT) defeated Fung 2-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) to clinch the match, and Keshav Chopra (GT) defeated junior Josh Howard-Tripp 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. 

Men’s tennis returns home to face Virginia Tech today at 1:30 p.m. and Virginia on Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

U of L men’s tennis picks up 4-2 win over Clemson  Monday, Apr 12 2021

The Louisville  men’s tennis team (9-8, 3-5 ACC) traveled to Clemson on April 9 and secured a 4-2 win over the Tigers (7-12, 1-9 ACC). 

In doubles, Clemson and Louisville both took a court; leaving the doubles point in the hands of court two. 

On court three, Clemson’s Jorge Plans Gonzalez and Carlos Kelaidis defeated freshman Kyle Tang and junior Alex Wesbrooks 6-4.

Louisville fought back as No. 60 sophomore Matthew Fung and junior Fabien Salle took down Ryuhei Azuma and Spencer Whitaker (CLEMSON) 6-3.

To round off doubles, senior Tin Chen and junior Sergio Hernandez fought hard to upset No. 22 Yizhou Liu and Teodor Giusca (CLEMSON) 7-6 (7-4). 

In singles, Salle secured an impressive 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 103 Kelaidis (CLEMSON).

Clemson put two points on the scoreboard with a win on court four over junior Josh Howard-Tripp, and a win on court three over Hernandez. 

Junior David Mizrahi pulled off a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Gonzalez (CLEMSON) to bring the overall score to 3-2. 

Fung took down Whitaker (CLEMSON) in a third set to clinch the match for the Cards (2-6, 7-5, 6-4). 

Following this match, men’s tennis traveled to Atlanta to face No. 32 Georgia Tech on Sunday, April 11.

No. 11 Georgia Tech tops No. 50 U of L women’s tennis Monday, Apr 12 2021

The Louisville women’s tennis team (7-11, 3-9) faced the No. 11 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (13-9, 6-5) on April 9 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center and lost with a final score of  5-2. 

The Cards fell short in doubles with Georgia Tech taking over courts one and three. 

Junior Rhea Verma and sophomore Andrea Di Palma fell 6-1 to No. 1 Victoria Flores and Kenya Jones (GT).

Louisville fought back on court two as No. 27 graduate student Raven Neely and sophomore Tatiana Simova upset No. 18 Ava Hrastar and Gia Cohen (GT) 6-2. 

Rounding off the doubles portion of the match, Carol Lee and Monika Dedaj (GT) defeated junior Dina Chaika and senior Nina Jovic 6-3. 

Georgia Tech carried momentum into singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Chaika.

The Yellow Jackets tallied another point with a 6-4, 6-4 win over senior Chelsea Sawyer.

Louisville fought back on court three as Neely defeated No. 99 Cohen (GT) 6-3, 4-6 and 3-6.

The match was decided on court two as No. 13 Flores (GT) prevailed over No. 93 Di Palma. 

Bringing the overall score to 5-1, No. 2 Jones (GT) took over court one with a 5-7, 6-2 and 6-1 win over Jovic.

The Cards finished off the match strong as Verma defeated Lee (GT) in a third set tiebreaker (6-4, 3-6, and 1-0). 

Women’s tennis returned to action Sunday, April 11 to face Clemson at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Fans were allowed to attend with face coverings.

Notre Dame sweeps U of L men’s tennis Monday, Apr 12 2021

U of L men’s tennis (8-8, 2-5) travelled to Notre Dame on April 3 (10-8, 4-4) and returned home with a 4-0 loss. The Fighting Irish defeated the Cards 4-1 in a matchup earlier in the season. 

Notre Dame quickly snagged the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.

Matthew Che and Richard Ciamarra (ND) defeated junior Alex Wesbrooks and freshman Kyle Tang 6-0. 

On court one, junior Fabien Salle and sophomore Matthew Fung fell 6-1 to Tristan McCormick and Axel Nefve (ND). 

Junior Sergio Hernandez and senior Tin Chen were down 2-3 against Brandon Acona and William Howells (ND) when the double’s point was clinched. 

In singles, Salle was first to finish with a 6-1, 6-0 loss against Ciamarra (ND).

Notre Dame took a 3-0 lead when Connor Fu (ND) defeated Fung 6-1, 6-1.

The match was clinched on court six as junior David Mizrahi fell 6-2, 6-3 to Ancona (ND). 

Matches on courts one, three and four were left unfinished.

Chen lost his first set 6-4 and was starting a second set when the match was clinched. 

Hernandez won his first set 6-1 and was tied at 5-5 against McCormick.

Junior Josh Howard-Tripp was down a set and going into a second. 

The Cards were back on the road to face Clemson on Friday, April 9 at 5 p.m. and Georgia Tech on Sunday, April 11 at 12 p.m.
