U of L men’s tennis heads home after loss in ACC tournament Wednesday, Apr 28 2021

The U of L men’s tennis team travelled to Rome, Ga. to compete in the ACC tournament. They returned home after a first-round 4-2 loss to No. 37 Duke. The Cards ended their season with a 9-12 overall record and a 3-8 ACC record. 

In doubles, Duke secured wins on courts one and three. 

Luca Keist and Andrew Dale (Duke) defeated junior Alex Wesbrooks and freshman Kyle Tang 6-3.

On court one, No. 45 junior Fabien Salle and sophomore Matthew Fung fell 7-6 (7-4) in a close matchup against No. 20 Garrett Johns and Sean Sculley (Duke). 

Junior Sergio Hernandez and senior Tin Chen were tied 6-6 with Duke’s Michael Heller and Andrew Zhang when the doubles point was clinched.

In singles, Duke took over courts one, four, and five to clinch the match. 

No. 69 Johns (Duke) defeated Chen 6-3, 6-3 to tally a point for the Blue Devils. 

Louisville fought back on court two as No. 57 Salle took down Sculley (Duke) 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Duke widened their lead with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win on court four over junior Josh Howard-Tripp. 

The Cards added another point to their total as junior David Mizrahi overcame Heller (Duke) 7-5, 7-6 (7-3). 

The Blue Devils clinched the match on court five with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 win over Fung.

U of L men’s tennis falls 4-1 to No. 5 Virginia on Senior Day Tuesday, Apr 20 2021

The Cards (9-11, 3-8 ACC) hosted No. 5 Virginia (18-2, 12-0 ACC) for their last match of the regular season before heading off to the ACC tournament. Louisville fell 4-1 to the Cavaliers at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center this Sunday afternoon.

The match started off with a tribute to senior Clement Filho, who has been with the team for five years. 

In doubles, Virginia took over courts two and three. 

Junior Alex Wesbrooks and freshman Kyle Tang fell 6-0 to Virginia’s Ryan Goetz and Gianni Ross. 

Louisville evened the score as No. 63 junior Fabien Salle and sophomore Matthew Fung defeated Jeffrey von der Schulenburg and Inaki Montes (UV) 6-2. 

Virginia clinched the doubles point on court two as No. 89 junior Sergio Hernandez and senior Tin Chen fell short (7-5) against William Woodall and Matthew Lord (UV). 

In singles, Virginia secured wins on courts one, three, and four.

Junior Josh Howard-Tripp fell 6-2, 6-3 to No. 96 Goetz (UV).

Bringing the overall score to 3-0, Hernandez suffered a 7-6, 6-1 loss to Montes (UV). 

Louisville fought back on court two as No. 57 Salle prevailed over Virginia’s Rodesch in a third set (4-6, 6-3 and 6-4). 

The match was clinched on court one as Chen fell 7-6, 7-5 in a close matchup with No. 24 Schulenburg (UV). 

Matches on courts five and six were left unfinished. 

Fung split sets with Ross (UV) and was tied 1-1 in the third (4-6, 7-6 and 1-1), and junior David Mizrahi split sets with Virginia’s Woodall (7-5, 6-7). 

Men’s tennis travels to Rome, Georgia on Wednesday, April 21 to compete in the ACC tournament.

No. 50 men’s tennis comes up short against No. 34 Virginia Tech Saturday, Apr 17 2021

Men’s tennis (9-10, 3-7 ACC) fell 4-3 in a close match against No. 34 Virginia Tech (11-7, 6-5 ACC) this Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

The Cards took the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.

Junior Alex Wesbrooks and freshman Kyle Tang swept Ryan Kros and Matthis Ross (VT) 6-0 on court three.

Following shortly after, No. 63 sophomore Matthew Fung and junior Fabien Salle faced No. 25 Ryan Fishback and Jordan Chrysostom (VT) 6-3 to clinch the doubles point.

Senior Tin Chen and junior Sergio Hernandez were tied 4-4 with Virginia Tech’s Mitch Harper and Alex Ribeiro, but their match was left unfinished.

The Cards took their winning momentum into singles as Salle defeated Ross (VT) 6-3, 6-3 to give Louisville a 2-0 lead.

Virginia Tech fought back with a win on court one as Harper (VT) defeated Chen in a third set (6-1, 2-6 6-4)

The Hokies evened the score as Hugo Maia (VT) secured a 6-3, 4-6 6-3 win over junior Josh Howard-Tripp.

No. 71 Hernandez put the Cards back in the lead with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 (7-4) win over No. 78 Carlo Donato (VT).

Virginia Tech brought the score to 3-3 as Alvaro Ariza (VT) prevailed 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 over junior David Mizrahi.

The match was decided on court five when Virginia Tech’s Fishback overcame Fung in a third set (6-3, 4-6 6-3).

Men’s tennis will host Virginia for their Senior Day on Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

No. 32 Georgia Tech tops U of L men’s tennis Monday, Apr 12 2021

The Louisville men’s tennis (9-9, 3-5 ACC) traveled to Atlanta  to face No. 32 Georgia Tech (11-8, 5-6 ACC) on April 11. They returned home with a 5-2 loss against the Yellow Jackets. 

Georgia Tech took the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. 

Louisville started off strong with junior Alex Wesbrooks and freshman Kyle Tang defeating Zummy Bauer and Brandon McKinney (GT) 6-4.

The Yellow Jackets evened the score with a close 7-5 win over junior Fabien Salle and sophomore Matthew Fung. 

The point was decided on court two as senior Tin Chen and junior Sergio Hernandez fell 7-6 (8-6) to Brandon Freestone and Pablo Schelcher (GT). 

Georgia Tech continued their winning streak with a 6-3, 6-3 win on court six over junior David Mizrahi.  

Salle put the Cards on the scoreboard with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Andres Martin (GT).

Advancing the score to 3-1, Georgia Tech’s Marcus McDaniel defeated Chen in a third set (6-1, 1-6, 6-4). 

Hernandez tallied another point for the Cards as he took down Schelcher (GT) 7-5, 7-5. 

Georgia Tech then secured wins on courts four and five to finish the match.

McKinney (GT) defeated Fung 2-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) to clinch the match, and Keshav Chopra (GT) defeated junior Josh Howard-Tripp 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. 

Men’s tennis returns home to face Virginia Tech today at 1:30 p.m. and Virginia on Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

U of L men’s tennis picks up 4-2 win over Clemson  Monday, Apr 12 2021

The Louisville  men’s tennis team (9-8, 3-5 ACC) traveled to Clemson on April 9 and secured a 4-2 win over the Tigers (7-12, 1-9 ACC). 

In doubles, Clemson and Louisville both took a court; leaving the doubles point in the hands of court two. 

On court three, Clemson’s Jorge Plans Gonzalez and Carlos Kelaidis defeated freshman Kyle Tang and junior Alex Wesbrooks 6-4.

Louisville fought back as No. 60 sophomore Matthew Fung and junior Fabien Salle took down Ryuhei Azuma and Spencer Whitaker (CLEMSON) 6-3.

To round off doubles, senior Tin Chen and junior Sergio Hernandez fought hard to upset No. 22 Yizhou Liu and Teodor Giusca (CLEMSON) 7-6 (7-4). 

In singles, Salle secured an impressive 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 103 Kelaidis (CLEMSON).

Clemson put two points on the scoreboard with a win on court four over junior Josh Howard-Tripp, and a win on court three over Hernandez. 

Junior David Mizrahi pulled off a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Gonzalez (CLEMSON) to bring the overall score to 3-2. 

Fung took down Whitaker (CLEMSON) in a third set to clinch the match for the Cards (2-6, 7-5, 6-4). 

Following this match, men’s tennis traveled to Atlanta to face No. 32 Georgia Tech on Sunday, April 11.

Men’s tennis sweep No. 38 Middle Tennessee in second matchup of the season Friday, Apr 2 2021

Men’s tennis upset No. 38 Middle Tennessee on Thursday with a 4-0 sweep at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards played the Blue Raiders earlier in the season at Middle Tennessee and faced a tough loss.

To start off doubles, Louisville secured wins on courts one and two.

Senior Tin Chen and junior Sergio Hernandez took down Tom Moonen and Chris Edge (MTSU) with an easy 6-1 win.

No. 60 junior Fabien Salle and sophomore Matthew Fung breezed by with a 6-2 win over No. 77 Pavel Motl and Stijn Slump to clinch the doubles point for the Cards.

The match on court three was left unfinished. Junior Alex Wesbrooks and freshman Kyle Tang were tied at 4-4 with Francisco Rocha and Max Rauch (MTSU).

Louisville kicked off singles with junior Josh Howard-Tripp defeating Middle Tennessee’s Edge 6-4, 6-4.

Advancing the score to 3-0, No. 56 Hernandez took over court two with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Moonen (MTSU).

Salle was able to overcome Slump (MTSU) in a third set (6-1, 3-6, 6-3) to clinch the match for Louisville.

Matches on courts one, five and six were left unfinished.

Chen won his first set 6-4 against No. 37 Rocha (MTSU) and was down 3-5 in the second set.

Fung won his first set 7-6 and was tied at 3-3 against Motl (MTSU) in the second set.

Junior David Mizrahi won his first set 7-5 and was tied at 5-5 against Rauch (MTSU) in the second set.

The Cards face Notre Dame for the second time this season on Saturday, April 3 at 1 p.m. at the Courtney Tennis Center in South Bend, Indiana.

Middle Tennessee State sweeps men’s tennis 4-0 Saturday, Mar 13 2021

The Cards (5-7, 1-5) traveled to Tennessee Mar. 12 to compete against Middle Tennessee State. The Blue Raiders (10-4, 1-0) swept all courts with a 4-0 win.

Louisville lost the doubles point with Middle Tennessee winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.

Starting off strong for the Cards, junior Fabien Salle and sophomore Matthew Fung took down Pavel Motl and Stijn Slump (MTSU) 6-1.

Middle Tennessee evened the score with a win over juniors Alex Wesbrooks and Josh Howard-Tripp.

The fate of the doubles point fell on court two as Tom Moonen and Chris Edge (MTSU) defeated junior Sergio Hernandez and senior Tin Chen.

Moving into singles, the Blue Raiders had a one-point lead.

Edge (MTSU) bumped the score up to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Howard-Tripp.

Junior David Mizrahi fell 6-1, 6-3 to Max Rauch (MTSU).

Hernandez came close to splitting sets with Middle Tennessee’s Slump, but fell short (6-3, 7-5).

The matches on courts one, two, and five were left unfinished.

On court one, Chen won his first set 6-3 and was down 2-4 in the second against Rocha (MTSU).

Salle lost his first set against Moonen (MTSU) but was up 5-3 in the second.

Fung lost his first set against Motl (MTSU) and was up 5-4 in the second.

The Cards spring back into action in a matchup against Tennessee next Friday, Mar. 19 at 1 p.m. at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.

No. 1 UNC tops men’s tennis 4-1 Saturday, Mar 6 2021

Newly No. 49-ranked men’s tennis (5-5, 1-4) hosted No. 1 UNC (9-0, 3-0) Mar. 5, and suffered a 4-1 loss.

The Cards lost the doubles point as UNC took over courts one and three.

Junior Fabien Salle and sophomore Matthew Fung fell 6-1 to UNC’s Benjamin Sigouin and Rinky Hijikata.

Louisville fought back on court two as junior Sergio Hernandez and senior Tin Chen secured a 6-4 win over Brian Cernoch and Adam Neff (UNC).

The doubles point went to UNC as Mac Kiger and Josh Peck (UNC) defeated juniors Josh Howard-Tripp and Alex Wesbrooks.

UNC carried their energy into singles winning over all courts except one.

The match on court five was completed first as Kiger (UNC) defeated Fung 6-3, 6-3.

Hernandez put Louisville’s only point up on the board with an impressive 7-6, 6-2 win over UNC’s Cernoch.

Wesbrooks fought but came up short in the third set of a tiring match against UNC’s Logan Zapp (4-6, 6-2, 6-1).

The match was clinched when No. 71 Chen fell 7-5, 7-6 to No. 55 Hijikata (UNC).

Matches on courts two and four were left unfinished.

Salle split sets with No. 41 Sigouin (UNC) and was tied at 2-2.

Howard-Tripp had just split sets with No. 100 Peck (UNC) and was heading into the final set.

The Cards face another tough matchup against Duke on Sunday, March 7 at 12 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

The match will be taking place outside, and fans are encouraged to come with face coverings on a first-come, first-serve basis.

NC State defeats men’s tennis in first ACC matchup Monday, Feb 22 2021

The University of Louisville’s men’s tennis team (4-2) faced a tough matchup against No. 19 North Carolina State on Feb. 19 (3-3) and suffered a 4-0 loss.

To kick off doubles, NC State’s Tadas Babelis and Robin Catry defeated sophomore Matthew Fung and junior Fabien Salle (6-3).

The Wolfpack took the doubles point with a 6-3 win over juniors Alex Wesbrooks and Josh Howard-Tripp.

The match on court two between senior Tin Chen and junior Sergio Hernandez and NC State’s No. 23 Alexis Galarneau and Robert Turzak was left unfinished (4-4).

For singles, Hernandez finished first with a 7-5, 6-0 loss against No. 95 ranked Babelis to give NC State a 2-0 lead over the Cards.

Tallying on another point to NC State’s score, No. 71 ranked Chen fell 7-6, 6-2 to No. 7 Galarneau.

To clinch the match, NC State’s Catry defeated Howard-Tripp 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.

Salle split sets and was tied 4-4 with Yannai Barkai in the third set when match play stopped.

J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center only features four tennis courts, so sophomore Matthew Fung and Wesbrooks had a late start into their singles matches.

Fung was up 5-2 when the match was clinched and Wesbrooks did not get a chance to play.

Men’s tennis takes on Wake Forest (7-2) Sunday, Feb. 21 at 1p.m. at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.

Men’s tennis falls to rival No. 19 Kentucky Monday, Feb 15 2021

The University of Louisville’s men’s tennis team (4-1) lost their first match of the season (4-2) to the No. 19 ranked Kentucky Wildcats (10-1) on Sunday, Feb. 14 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

The Cards started off strong by securing the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.

Junior Fabien Salle and sophomore Matthew Fung defeated Kentucky’s Cesar Bourgois and Gabriel Diallo 6-3 at the No. 1 spot.

To clinch the doubles point, juniors Alex Wesbrooks and Josh Howard-Tripp took down Yasha Zemel and Ying-Ze Chen (6-4) at the No. 3 spot.

Louisville took their winning momentum into singles as junior Sergio Hernandez secured an impressive 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 123 ranked Joshua Lapadat.

Kentucky fought back on courts two and three to even out the overall score to 2-2.

Salle fell 7-5, 6-2 to Diallo, and Howard-Tripp fell 6-1, 7-5 to Bourgois.

On court one No. 71 ranked senior Tin Chen lost a hard-fought match (6-4, 7-5) against Kentucky’s No. 45 ranked Liam Draxl to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead.

The fate of the Card’s fell into the hands of Fung and Wesbrooks on courts five and six.

Fung came up short in the third set (4-6, 6-3, 4-6) and Kentucky’s Zemel secured the win for the Wildcats.

Wesbrooks was battling in the third set when the match was called (6-7, 6-4, 4-2).

Men’s tennis travels to North Carolina next weekend to take on NC State (2-3) on Friday, Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
