U of L women’s tennis drops first round match against Duke Wednesday, Apr 28 2021

The U of L women’s tennis team travelled to Rome, Ga. to compete in the ACC tournament. They returned home after a 4-0 loss against No. 14 Duke in the first round. The Cards ended their season with a 9-13 overall record and a 3-10 conference record. 

In doubles, Duke took over courts two and three.

Chloe Beck and Karolina Berankova (Duke) defeated seniors Raven Neely and Chelsea Sawyer 6-3.

On court three, sophomore Tatiana Simova and junior Dina Chaika fell 6-3 to Duke’s Kelly Chen and Georgia Drummy. 

Junior Rhea Verma and sophomore Andrea Di Palma were up 5-4 against Meible Chi and Margaryta Bilokin (Duke), but their match was left unfinished. 

In singles, Duke secured wins on courts one, two, and six.

Nelly fell 6-2, 6-2 to Beck.

Duke tallied another point as Di Palma came up short against Drummy (6-3, 6-2).

The match was clinched on court six as Chaika fell 5-7, 0-6 to Hannah Zhao (Duke).

U of L women’s tennis celebrates Senior Day with 6-1 win over Butler Tuesday, Apr 20 2021

The Cards (8-12, 3-10 ACC) hosted Butler for their last match of the regular season before heading off to the ACC tournament. Louisville defeated the Bulldogs 6-1 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center this Saturday afternoon. 

The match started off with a tribute to seniors Raven Neely and Nikolina Jovic. 

In doubles, Louisville took over courts one and two.

On court one, sophomore Andrea Di Palma and junior Rhea Verma defeated Natalie Boesing and Lauren Marx (BU) 6-2.

Shortly after, seniors Chelsea Sawyer and Raven Neely took down Delaney Schurhamer and Sara Linn (BU) 6-2.

Juniors Dina Chaika and Jelena Vujanic were up 5-4 against Lauryn Padgett and Veronika Bruetting (BU) when matchplay stopped. 

The Cards secured wins on all courts except one in singles. 

Di Palma finished first with a quick 6-1, 6-1 win over Butler’s Padgett.

Verma secured another win for the Cards (6-2, 6-1) on court four over Linn (BU). 

Neely took down Schurhamer (BU) 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the match. 

Bringing the overall score to 5-0, Vujanic prevailed over Marx (BU) 6-3, 6-2. 

Next, Chaika took over court six with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bruetting (BU). 

Butler fought back one court one as Boesing (BU) defeated Jovic 6-4, 7-6 and 10-6 to complete the match. 

Women’s tennis travels to Rome, Georgia on Wednesday, April 21 to compete in the ACC tournament.

No. 50 women’s tennis falls 3-4 to Clemson Monday, Apr 12 2021

The No. 50 Louisville women’s tennis team (7-12, 3-10 ACC) was defeated by the Clemson Tigers (8-14, 2-10 ACC) Sunday, April 11 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Louisville lost with a final score of 3-4. 

The Tigers took the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. 

Junior Rhea Verma and sophomore Andrea Di Palma took over court one with a 6-2 win over Clemson’s Cristina Mayorova and Sophia Hatton. 

Clemson bounced back with a 6-4 win on court three over senior Nikolina Jovic and junior Dina Chaika. 

The point was clinched on court two as Ali Despain and Laura Marti (CLEMSON) defeated Chelsea Sawyer and graduate student Raven Neely.

Louisville fought hard in singles but came up short.

Mayorova (CLEMSON) defeated Jovic 6-4, 6-2; advancing Clemson’s overall lead to 2-0. 

Hatton upset No. 93 Di Palma 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

The Cards then went on to secure two consecutive wins on courts three and four. 

On court three, Neely took down Clemson’s Middlebrooks in a close 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) match. 

Sawyer topped Despain (CLEMSON) in a third set (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) to bring the overall score to 3-2.

The Tigers clinched the match as Marti defeated junior Jelena Vujanic 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. 

The Cards finished strong as Verma took down Lana Sipek (CLEMSON) 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. 

Women’s tennis finishes their regular season next weekend as they face Butler today at 12 p.m. They will celebrate their Senior Day before the match.

No. 11 Georgia Tech tops No. 50 U of L women’s tennis Monday, Apr 12 2021

The Louisville women’s tennis team (7-11, 3-9) faced the No. 11 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (13-9, 6-5) on April 9 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center and lost with a final score of  5-2. 

The Cards fell short in doubles with Georgia Tech taking over courts one and three. 

Junior Rhea Verma and sophomore Andrea Di Palma fell 6-1 to No. 1 Victoria Flores and Kenya Jones (GT).

Louisville fought back on court two as No. 27 graduate student Raven Neely and sophomore Tatiana Simova upset No. 18 Ava Hrastar and Gia Cohen (GT) 6-2. 

Rounding off the doubles portion of the match, Carol Lee and Monika Dedaj (GT) defeated junior Dina Chaika and senior Nina Jovic 6-3. 

Georgia Tech carried momentum into singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Chaika.

The Yellow Jackets tallied another point with a 6-4, 6-4 win over senior Chelsea Sawyer.

Louisville fought back on court three as Neely defeated No. 99 Cohen (GT) 6-3, 4-6 and 3-6.

The match was decided on court two as No. 13 Flores (GT) prevailed over No. 93 Di Palma. 

Bringing the overall score to 5-1, No. 2 Jones (GT) took over court one with a 5-7, 6-2 and 6-1 win over Jovic.

The Cards finished off the match strong as Verma defeated Lee (GT) in a third set tiebreaker (6-4, 3-6, and 1-0). 

Women’s tennis returned to action Sunday, April 11 to face Clemson at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Fans were allowed to attend with face coverings.

Women’s tennis defeated 6-1 by No. 35 Miami Tuesday, Mar 23 2021

The women’s tennis team (6-8, 3-6) traveled to Florida to face Miami University, but returned with a 6-1 loss to the Hurricanes (8-5, 5-3).

In doubles, Miami took over courts one and three.

Daevenia Achong and Florencia Urrutia (UM) defeated junior Dina Chaika and senior Chelsea Sawyer 6-2.

On court one, sophomore Andrea Di Palma and junior Rhea Verma fell 6-4 to Miami’s E. Perez-Somarriba and Isabella Pfennig.

Louisville secured a win on court two as senior Raven Neely and sophomore Tatiana Simova took down Diana Khodan and Maya Tahan (UM) 6-4.

Miami took the lead heading into singles.

The match on court one concluded first as senior Nikolina Jovic retired in the second set.

To give Miami a three-point lead, Verma fell 6-0, 6-1 to Khodan (UM).

Miami’s No. 87 Achong clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Neely.

Tahan (MU) defeated Chaika 6-2, 6-4 on court six to tally another point for the Hurricanes.

Sawyer put the Cards on the scoreboard with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3) win over Urrutia (UM).

To finish the match, Isabella Pfennig (UM) defeated Andrea Di Palma (LOU) 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) in a hard-fought match.

The Cards host Xavier on Friday, March 26 at 12 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

No. 6 Florida State prevails 4-1 over women’s tennis Tuesday, Mar 23 2021

The Cards (6-8, 3-6) traveled to Florida State University on Friday, March 19 and suffered a 4-1 loss against the No.6-ranked Seminoles (12-3, 7-2).

FSU secured the doubles point after taking over courts two and three.

On court three, Petra Hule and Giulia Pairone (FSU) outlasted senior Chelsea Sawyer and junior Dina Chaika with a 6-0 win.

The point was clinched when sophomore Tatiana Simova and senior Raven Neely fell 6-3 to Andrea Garcia and Nandini Das (FSU).

FSU’s Victoria Allen and Emmanuelle Salas were up 5-4 against junior Rhea Verma and sophomore Andrea DiPalma, but their match was left unfinished.

In singles, Neely secured the Cards their only point of the match as her opponent Anna Arkadianou (FSU) retired. Neely won her first set 6-3 and was up 1-0 in the second.

FSU bounced back with wins on courts one, four and six.

On court six, Garcia (FSU) defeated junior Jelena Vujanic 6-1, 6-3.

Bringing to overall score to 3-1, FSU’s Das secured a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sawyer.

To clinch the match, Pairone (FSU) defeated senior Nikolina Jovic 6-3, 6-4 on court one.

Matches on courts two and five were left unfinished.

Di Palma lost her first set 6-4 and was down 4-2 in the second against Salas (FSU), and Verma lost her first set 7-5 against Allen (FSU) and was up 4-1 in the second.

Women’s tennis loses close battle against No. 27 Wake Forest Monday, Mar 15 2021

Louisville (6-7, 3-5) suffered a 4-3 loss against No. 27 Wake Forest (7-6, 3-3) Sunday afternoon.

To kick off doubles, Brooke Killingsworth and Anna Brylin (WF) defeated senior Raven Neely and sophomore Tatiana Simova 6-2.

Wake Forest clinched the doubles point as junior Rhea Verma and sophomore Andrea Di Palma fell 6-2 to Carolyn Campana and Eliza Omirou (WF).

The Cards took over court three as senior Chelsea Sawyer and junior Dina Chaika prevailed over Wake Forest’s Anna Campana and Peyton Pesavento (6-3).

The Demon Deacons had a 1-0 lead over the Cards heading into singles.

Sawyer put Louisville on the scoreboard with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Killingsworth (WF).

Wake Forest fought back on court six as Casie Wooten (WF) defeated Simova 6-1, 6-2.

The Cards evened the score to 2-2 when Verma upset No. 98 Omirou (WF) 6-4, 6-3.

Neely, Di Palma, and senior Nikolina Jovic all went into third sets.

Brylin (WF) defeated Neely 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, bringing the overall score to 2-3.

To clinch the match, No. 21 Campana (WF) overcame Jovic (6-3, 4-6, 6-3).

Although the Demon Deacons had already taken the match, Di Palma fought to tally another point for the Cards with a win over Campana (WF).

The Cards travel to face Florida State on Friday, March 19 at 12 p.m. and Miami on Sunday, March 21 at 12 p.m.

Cardinals Fall to No. 27 Wake Forest in Tightly Contested Match Monday, Mar 15 2021

The University of Louisville women’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 battle with No. 27-ranked Wake Forest Sunday afternoon in the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

“It was a grind. I sound like a bit of a broken record but it is just so tough. We don’t really have any easy matches. We fought today and we were close and had some opportunities. We had three singles that we could of possibly won and turned some things around. We came out and didn’t play as well as we could of in doubles and they took advantage of that. It is a heartbreaker, but it is life in the ACC,” said UofL head coach Mark Beckham.

The Cardinals dropped the doubles point despite a 6-3 win at No. 3 by Dina Chaika and Chelsea Sawyer, who downed Anna Campana and Peyton Pesavento. UofL fell at the No. 1 and 2 spots to give the Deacons a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

Sawyer evened the match score with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4. But teammate Tatiana Simova fell 6-1, 6-2 at the Cards’ No. 6 slot. Rhea Verma tied the match back up when she rolled 6-4, 6-3 in an upset of No. 98-ranked Eliza Omirou. UofL’s Raven Neely put up a battle before falling in three sets at No. 3. The Cards lost at No. 1 but Andrea Di Palma out-lasted Anna Campana at No. 2 with a 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 (10-4) win.

The Cardinals hit the road to make an ACC swing through Florida, facing the Seminoles of Florida State on Friday. March 19 and Miami on Sunday, March 21.

Women’s tennis falls 5-2 to No. 10 NC State Saturday, Mar 13 2021

The Cards (6-6, 3-4) returned home to face NC State (8-3, 3-2) on Friday and fell 5-2 to the top-10 Wolfpack.

NC State took the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.

Amelia Rajecki and Abigail Rencheli (NCS) defeated senior Chelsea Sawyer and junior Dina Chaika 6-2 to start off the match.

The doubles point was clinched when junior Rhea Verma and sophomore Andrea Di Palma fell 6-2 to No. 2 Anna Rogers and Alana Smith (NCS).

Senior Raven Neely and sophomore Tatiana Simova were up 4-3 against NC State’s No. 16 Jaeda Daniel and Adriana Reami, but their match was left unfinished.

To kick off singles, No. 35 Rogers (NCS) defeated senior Nikolina Jovic 6-3, 6-2.

NC State tallied another point as junior Jelena Vujanic fell 6-1, 6-3 to Rencheli (NCS).

Louisville fought back with a huge win on court three. Neely upset No. 38 Reami (NCS) 6-4, 7-5, to put the Cards on the scoreboard.

Courts two, four, and five all went into third sets.

The first to finish of the three was Di Palma who was defeated 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 by No. 23 Smith (NCS).

Next, NC State’s Lexi Keberle defeated Verma 7-6, 4-6, 6-0.

Even though the match was clinched, Sawyer picked up a 6-1, 6-7, 7-5 win on court four over Daniel (NCS).

Women’s tennis hosts Wake Forest on Sunday, Mar. 14 at 12 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

Women’s tennis picks up overdue win over Virginia Tech Saturday, Mar 6 2021

After a two-match losing streak, women’s tennis (6-4, 3-2) picked up a 5-2 win in an ACC matchup against Virginia Tech (2-7, 0-4).

The Cards quickly secured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three.

On court two, sophomore Tatiana Simova and senior Raven Neely defeated Annie Clark and Nina Sorkin (VT) 6-2.

Senior Chelsea Sawyer and junior Dina Chaika took down Erika Cheng and Katie Andreini (VT) with a 6-4 win.

Sophomore Andrea Di Palma and junior Rhea Verma were up 5-3 when the doubles point was clinched.

The Cards took a 1-0 lead over the Hokies going into singles.

On court three, Neely overcame Sorkin (VT) with a 6-3, 6-1 win.

Pushing the lead to 3-0, Verma topped Andreini (VT) 6-2, 6-4.

The match was clinched on court six as junior Jelena Vujanic defeated Cheng (VT) 6-1, 7-5.

Next to finish was Sawyer with a close 7-6(5), 6-4 win over Virginia Tech’s Elizabet Danailova.

The match on court two was decided when Di Palma retired, leaving the win to the Hokies (2-6, 7-5, 4-0).

Virginia Tech tallied another point with an extremely competitive 7-6(5), 6(6)-7, 1-0(7) win over senior Nikolina Jovic.

Women’s tennis faces Virginia March 6 at 12 p.m. at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center.
