U of L Football Defeats EKU At First Home Game Sunday, Sep 12 2021

By: Hannah Walker–

On Sept. 11, Louisville football returned for their first home game of the season against Eastern Kentucky. After losing against Ole Miss last week, Louisville gained redemption when they won against EKU with a final score of 30-3.

At the start of the game, EKU won the coin toss and decided to defer to the second half. Louisville received and led strong offensive plays throughout the first quarter. By 4:27 on the clock, redshirt junior quarterback Malik Cunningham gained 10 more yards and gave Louisville their first touchdown.

Louisville continued to play at their best throughout the second quarter. Two more touchdowns were made with the help of Cunningham, and EKU struggled to keep up. Still, EKU was able to score three points during the second quarter when they kicked from the 39 yard line. This put the score at 20-3 going into the third quarter.

The Cards improved with defense as the game continued, and they were able to push back EKU numerous times throughout the last quarters of the game.

The Cards also continued to play great offense throughout the third quarter; scoring another touchdown with 5:32 on the clock. Cunningham once again stepped up and made a complete pass for 30 yards to redshirt junior wide- receiver Justin Marshall. This led Louisville to a score of 27-3 going into the fourth quarter.

As the final quarter started, Louisville made it a priority to stop EKU from scoring during the final minutes of the game. They were successful in doing so, and won with a final score of 30-3.

Louisville will play at home again on Friday, Sept. 17, at 7:30 p.m. They will be facing the UCF Knights in hopes of continuing the start to their winning streak.
